Inês Zenha is a 26 year old Portuguese artist based between Lisbon and Paris. Her work divides in a wide range of media: sculpture, ceramics, assemblage-installation and painting. Her sculptures considers painting in its specificity and context, in relationship to bodies and space. Approaching concerns around materials and support to questions around desire, intimacy and violence, Inês reimagines the body of painting through an abstract lesbian discourse alternative to a totalizing and fixed system of representation. It questions the placement of a body that is both constructed and erased by the structures of support, but at the same time a body that reclaims space for becoming-other, striving for the abolition of straight concrete fixities in favour of individual fluid expression. Sometimes the wall opens, others a window offers escape, opening a door, but not yet closing it. From the inside outwards the frame, she collects, deconstructs and rebuilds the inside parts of a house, like the inside of her-selves. The essence of her work, lies behind the (un)domestic performance of this process. Each object, each material, the weight, the scale, the movement, the use of archetypal gender colours, the fragility or plasticity between folding, holding and opening into - all of these play symbolic roles within her visual narrative. |
